Changes in Social Security...What do I do?

Social Security benefits are undergoing frequent changes. A notable development is the Fairness Act, signed into law by President Biden, which eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset. These provisions previously reduced Social Security benefits for individuals receiving a non-covered pension, defined as a pension where earnings were not subject to Social Security taxes.

The legislation was enacted on January 5, 2025. Many Social Security beneficiaries have already observed increased deposits reflecting their enhanced benefits. However, some have asked, "What if I did not apply for benefits because I was informed or believed I was ineligible due to my pension?" The Social Security Administration (SSA) advises applying for benefits promptly, as timely filing is essential.

It is also important to ensure that your personal information, direct deposit details, and mailing address are accurate in the SSA's records. If there are discrepancies, recipients should create a My Social Security account or contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 to update this information. Keeping your information current with the agency is crucial. Simplifying Social Security offers assistance to those needing guidance on the Fairness Act or other SSA-related matters.
